AEJMC Strategic Plan

The AEJMC Strategic Plan

• AEJMC Action Plan for 2009-10

December 2008 proposal

"AEJMC could be the most influential academic association among media practitioners and media policy makers. We are the largest association of media scholars. We are more successful than we have ever been. For 95 years, our members have helped shape the understanding of the field for those who practice it . . . We know our fields and our disciplines face challenges. We know we should offer leadership in shaping the future of our field. Individually, we have taken steps to respond. The strategic planning process gives us the chance to decide how our Association should lead." — AEJMC President Charles Self, “The Challenge of Shaping Change” from AEJMC News, November 2007

Action Plan for 2009-10

In December 2008, the AEJMC Board approved an action plan for coming year. Based on a proposal by the Implementation Committee, the association will focus on two directions first:

  • Make AEJMC the primary resource for scholarship in our field
  • Strenghten our identity, image and influence

Work begins in January 2009 and a report will be presented to the membership during the Boston convention in August.

Directions Approved

The AEJMC membership approved the eight proposed directions during the Chicago Convention in August 2008. A 12-member Strategic Plan Implementation Committee began work on specific objectives and tactics after the approval. A plan for moving the Strategic Directions forward was approved by the AEJMC Board of Directors in December 2008. Committee members are: Alex Tan of Washington State (Chair), Mary Arnold of South Dakota State, Lori Bergen of Texas State San Marcos, Fred Blevens of Flordia International, Jason Chambers of Illinois, Lillie Fears of Arkansas State, Kathy Roberts Forde of Minnesota, Suzette Heiman of Missouri, David Mindich of St. Michael's, Dan Reimold of Ohio, Shyam Sundar of Penn State and Birgit Wassmuth of Kennesaw State.
