Any AEJMC member can propose a resolution, and each year the Resolutions Committee of the Professional Freedom and Responsibility Committee shepherds resolutions submitted by AEJMC members or divisions and interest groups to the floor of the business meeting.

Here’s how it works:

1. Proposed resolutions and supporting information should be submitted to the Resolutions chair.
2. The proposed resolution is then discussed by the PF&R Committee in its general business meeting during the AEJMC convention.
3. The Resolutions Committee meets with the sponsors of proposed resolutions during the Resolutions Hearing, typically scheduled the day prior to the general business meeting. Here individuals can describe and promote their proposals. This discussion helps move the proposed resolution to the business meeting floor, although it is possible that the Resolutions chair or the PF&R Committee could reject the proposal for numerous reasons.
4. If the proposal is approved, its sponsor then has PF&R’s endorsement when he or she brings the resolution up for a vote at the business meeting. *It should be noted that any AEJMC member may bring a resolution directly to the business meeting without conferring with the Resolutions and PF&R committees.

What makes a good and likely successful proposed resolution?

1. Have a clear idea of what you want to see done and how to do it.
2. Make sure that your proposal is based on facts.
3. Gather feedback from your peers prior to submittal.
4. Provide context for your proposal.
5. Consider opposition and shape your proposal accordingly.
6. Be clear and direct.
