AEJMC and ASJMC founded the Journalism and Mass Communication Leadership Institute for Diversity (JLID) program in 2000. JLID was created to provide training and mentoring for people of color and women interested in becoming JMC deans, directors or chairs. AEJMC is grateful to the Ethics and Excellent in Journalism Foundation for its funding commitment to the program in 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09. The program is administered by the AEJMC/ASJMC Central Office staff. The association is currently seeking funding for future years of the program.
The program is the creation of 1999-2000 AEJMC President Dr. Marilyn Kern-Foxworth. Dr Kern-Foxworth joined with the 1999-2000 ASJMC president Dr. Shirley Staples Carter to make the program a reality. The program is overseen by a six-member Advisory Board of JMC educators and administrators.
