Manhattan College

Assistant Professor – Tenure Track *Search Extended*

Manhattan College’s Communication Department seeks a tenure-track faculty member, at the assistant professor level, to join and participate in the building of our dynamic and still relatively new undergraduate program.  We are looking for someone who will guide our concentration in journalism, but who is also a communication generalist.  In addition, we seek someone committed to the balance of theory and practice, given our commitment to the liberal arts tradition and the College’s Lasallian tradition and to take advantage of our location in the northernmost borough of New York City.  By theory, we mean theory that connects our discipline to the liberal arts, to ethical practice in the media/mass media industry, to the use of media by citizens and consumers, to media’s impact on individuals and society/culture, and to the role of journalism within a democratic political system.  By practice, we mean someone with either or both a record of professional experience and a willingness to work and network with the industry in Manhattan to create internship and career opportunities for our students.

The successful candidate must be willing to teach basic courses as well as courses in journalism, and will serve as advisor for our student newspaper, The Quadrangle (for which s/he will receive either course release time or a stipend).  The candidate must also be committed to steering our students across the frontier of our digital future, with respect to the changes and uncertainties digital media present for the news industry and journalistic practice, and the consequence of these changes and uncertainties for the provision and necessity of news in a democratic society.

Finally, we are particularly interested in a candidate who would be interested to teach core courses in our program including ethics in mass communication, media theory and research, and our capstone senior thesis course.

Ph.D. in journalism expected.  Record of publication and commitment to teaching a must.

To start Fall 2017. Applications will be considered until 15 March 2017.
