The University of Maryland’s Philip Merrill College of Journalism is seeking a full-time, professional track faculty member experienced in news interaction design and development to teach courses and lead our curriculum in the areas of digital design, interactive journalism and web development. The successful candidate will develop and teach courses in innovative digital design/development to undergraduate and graduate journalism students. The candidate will also work collaboratively with students and other faculty members to produce interactive journalism projects and innovative digital experiences published through the college’s news organization.

The preferred candidate is someone who expresses their creativity through code and has hands-on experience building digital interfaces and data visualizations that communicate information in compelling and memorable formats. In addition to teaching and developing a range of courses, the successful candidate will engage in service to the college and university and pursue creative, scholarly or professional activities relevant to the discipline.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Professional experience as an interaction designer/developer or a digital designer/developer
  • Mastery of principles of digital design and user-centered design practices
  • Fluency in HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, version control tools
  • Experience working with common frameworks and libraries for user interaction, web design and development, data visualization and cartography
  • Experience designing for mobile and desktop devices
  • Experience with graphic design tools (Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop and Illustrator, and others)
  • Strong creative portfolio of digital design and development projects
  • Basic ability to analyze data (in Excel or similar)
  • Commitment to continual self-improvement and learning new skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or other advanced degree
  • Teaching experience (including part-time, conference workshops and workplace training)
  • Experience working for a news or media organization
  • Experience with advanced data acquisition and analysis (R, Python, MySQL workbench or similar)
  • Experience with Python or PHP
  • Experience in mobile app development.
  • Experience with, or demonstrated interest in, designing and developing visual experiences on emerging platforms (such as virtual reality, augmented reality, digital voice assistants)
