Assistant Professor in Journalism

About the Position: Assistant Professor of Journalism, with experience in newswriting/editorial, and additional experience in environmental journalism preferred. While environmental reporting is preferred, other journalism related areas of expertise may also be considered. The position is full time, tenure track, beginning September 2018.  We strive for a diverse range of applicants, including women, people of color, veterans and people with disabilities. The WWU Department of Journalism seeks a colleague with strong professional and academic experience to teach in a program oriented toward news media with sequences in news-editorial, public relations and visual journalism. A dual-major in environmental journalism with the Huxley College of the Environment is also being reinstated.

About the College/Department: The journalism department offers strong, professionally oriented undergraduate news-editorial, public relations and visual journalism sequences. At the heart of the department’s curriculum are its writing courses – news writing, editing, reporting, feature writing, advanced reporting and public relations. These courses stress clarity, accuracy and depth of content in a sequence designed to develop professional skills, sensitivity to people and understanding of society. Publications produced by journalism students have won numerous state, regional and national awards. The department has nine full-time positions and several adjunct positions, and puts a high premium on teaching quality, maintaining small class sizes (for example, writing and editing classes are capped at 18 students) and an intimate working environment for faculty and students. The department has more than 300 majors, pre-majors and minors.

The department is widely recognized for excellence in journalism instruction and is an integral part of a minor in Internet resources. Students are required to complete a supervised internship. The department has a Macintosh teaching lab and state-of-the-art laboratories for the student-produced newspaper, magazines and online publications. Position Responsibilities:

  • Teach courses designed for students across all three majors (News-Ed, PR and VJ) – such as newswriting and editing
  • Teach courses with an emphasis on digital media and/or environmental journalism
  • Advise students
  • Collaborate on curriculum development and participate in program activities
  • Maintain a research, creative and/or professional practice agenda
  • Participate in committee work, departmental and university governance activities

Required Qualifications:

  • Full-time professional experience in traditional or online news
  • Three or more years of professional experience in journalism or a related field
  • Master’s degree in Journalism or related field
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching in higher education and an ability and interest in working closely with students
  • Ability to teach a variety of courses for all majors including communication theory, editing, newswriting, ethics
  • Evidence of an established research agenda or scholarly achievement
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues on curriculum development and program activities
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student body

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in or teaching environmental journalism
  • Evidence of digital media experience either professionally or teaching
  • Evidence of leadership in an academic or professional setting
  • Ability to teach courses in other areas, reporting, intro to mass media, online journalism, media history, media law, grammar; and ability to advise student newspaper and magazine
  • Ability to address diversity or gender issues across the curriculum
