Full-Time Faculty and Director of the Center of Excellence in Journalism, College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS), American University of Armenia (AUA).

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at the American University of Armenia is seeking a full-time faculty in Journalism, who will also serve as the Director for its new Center of Excellence in Journalism (CEJ). They are expected to join AUA in July 2024 or shortly afterwards but no later than January 2025.

CEJ is being established in partnership with the U.S. Embassy Yerevan within the framework of the Project “Establishing a University Partnership to Create an MA Program & Center for Excellence in Journalism (CEJ) in Armenia”. It will serve as a hub for research, training, and continuous program enhancement bringing together experts in journalism education and media development to support the growth of journalism as a valued profession in Armenia. The Center will provide training and resources to practicing journalists, as well as support the design and implementation of new media initiatives. The grant also covers the development of a new MA program in Journalism that is scheduled to launch in Fall 2025. It is currently under development in partnership with Washington State University (WSU)’s Murrow College of Communication. Both the new program and the Center will contribute to preparing journalists, providing training for professional journalists, research, and outreach. AUA is also developing a new state-of-the-art Media Lab, which includes facilities for video recording, podcasting, editing, and so on.

In addition to engaging in administrative duties as Director of CEJ, in the first year, our new colleague will collaborate with faculty on program and resource development. They will also engage in a short exchange program at WSU to experience firsthand Murrow’s experiential approach to journalism education and forge collaborative ties with Murrow faculty. In addition to engaging in administrative duties, responsibilities will also include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, supervising student capstones, pursuing a research agenda, and serving the university and the profession.

Candidates should have significant professional experience as a working journalist, as well as teaching experience. The candidate’s rank will be determined based on their qualifications and experience.

Compensation: Compensation is commensurate with university-wide pay scale, qualifications and experience. AUA offers an extensive benefits package to international hires, including a housing allowance and an international travel allowance.

The BA in English and Communications Program of the American University of Armenia (AUA) (http://aua.am/ba-english-and-communications/) is seeking applicants for an open-rank full-time faculty position starting in August 2024.

The candidate will teach undergraduate classes in English & Communications, as well as graduate classes in AUA’s Journalism MA program, scheduled to launch in Fall 2025. They will also serve as the director of AUA’s new Center for Excellence in Journalism. A collaboration between AUA and its funding partner, the US Embassy, this Center seeks to provide training for professional journalists in Armenia, to promote journalistic ethics and media literacy, and to combat disinformation. The Center director will also have access to the resources available through AUA’s new state-of-the-art Media Lab, which includes facilities for video recording, podcasting, editing, and more.

This position will also involve teaching five classes per academic year, engaging in program development and university service, and pursuing an active research agenda. In the first year, they will work with colleagues from AUA and Washington State University’s Murrow College of Communication to develop the curriculum for the Journalism MA program.

Documented excellence in teaching is required; preference will be given to candidates with experience in teaching non-native English speakers and/or conducting academic duties in an international setting.
