Research Assistant Professor (Renewable Contract) – CIROH/AWI & CCIS

The University of Alabama (UA) seeks applications for a social scientist to join a growing team supporting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH). The social scientist will bring to UA and CIROH expertise in social and behavioral sciences to work closely with CIROH researchers and NOAA operational professionals to design and implement mixed methods research studies seeking to understand risk perceptions, attitudes, behaviors, and preferences of users of hydrologic forecast information related to floods, droughts, and water quality. The social scientist will use surveys, focus group facilitation, interviews, stakeholder engagement, document analysis, desk research, and other methods to collect information. The social scientist will conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis of research results using statistical, visualization, modeling, and other analysis and synthesis tools. The social scientist’s activities will support translation of CIROH research into operations at the NOAA Office of Water Prediction (OWP), the National Water Center, and other operational endpoints.

The social scientist will receive a nine-month appointment (renewable contract) with workload split between CIROH, at 90%, and the College of Communication and Information Sciences (C&IS), at 10%; the social scientist will also be situated in one of the C&IS academic units: Advertising & Public Relations, Communication Studies, Journalism & Creative Media, or Library & Information Studies. The initial appointment for this position is expected to last three years (with potential for renewal); it is anticipated that this position will not carry a teaching load. The social scientist will: support and/or oversee research projects, in coordination with CIROH and NOAA/OWP collaborators; assume responsibility for monitoring, assessing, and supporting social science research projects being led by CIROH researchers; lead and/or make significant contributions to the planning and design of research and creative proposals and projects; develop, organize, and participate in meetings, discussion sessions, workshops, and seminars related to research project assignments; assist in short- and long-term planning for the CIROH social science research portfolio; and actively disseminate research and project findings.

When a tenure-track faculty member passes the interim review, the first reappointment of two years shall be confirmed before the end of the initial appointment (three years).By default, the final review shall be carried out in the second semester of the fifth year (tenth semester) and completed by the end of the fifth year on the tenure track. When the tenure-track faculty member passes the final review, the faculty member will become a tenured faculty member from the following semester. The second reappointment of two years may be granted to a tenure-track faculty member who fails the final review. The tenure-track faculty member may request an interim review or a final review at any time in or after the second semester of the second year (fourth semester) following appointment.

    If maternity and/or parental leave is taken before the end of the interim or final review, the period of the tenure-track faculty member may be extended by a period equivalent to the maternity and/or parental leave, subject to the approval of the University, provided that the total period of continuous service does not exceed 10 years.

    If you have had an employment contract with Waseda University (regardless of job title) since April 1, 2013, and there is no period of at least six months without an employment contract with Waseda University at the scheduled start of this position, in principle, there is a limit to the duration of the employment contract. The Director is charged with providing functional oversight of advertising, marketing, distribution, finance, and personnel, advising student content leaders and serving as a liaison to the Student Media Board. The Director oversees professional and student staff in Student Media, reports to the Director of the School of Media and Journalism, and serves on the School’s Faculty Advisory Committee.

Kent State Student Media is in the early stages of executing a cutting-edge strategic plan that emphasizes audience engagement across new and emerging distribution mediums, including social media, streaming video, streaming audio, and podcasts, while retaining ties to legacy newspaper, magazine, radio, and TV platforms. The plan is designed to enable Student Media to provide the best possible service to the university community, industry-standard training for students in a variety of media fields and protect the independent content decisions of students.

The Director will serve as the adviser to student leaders and staff for the university’s digital media brand, repositioning it as the primary distribution medium for student-produced content. The successful candidate will help select and coordinate efforts with advisers across all Student Media units, ensuring all students have access to professional mentoring and advising.

In addition, the Director:

  • Serves as a non-voting member of the Student Media Board.
  • Works collaboratively with student leaders to execute the Student Media strategic plan and updates key constituencies with a report on progress each semester.
  • Works with the Director of the School of Media and Journalism and faculty to enhance and create co-curricular opportunities that align with the School’s Strategic Plan.
  • Through the office staff, provides support services to Student Media units.
  • Manages revenue and expenses; recommends and/or approves investments and equipment purchases; ensures the proper use and maintenance of all Student Media equipment.
  • Serves as the public face of Student Media and cultivates positive relations with the university, community, and media industry leaders.

QUALIFICATIONS

Our ideal candidate would have a bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or a related field and have a minimum of five years’ experience in a professional or college/university media organization. Key competencies include leadership, digital media, and financial management experience. Our preferred qualifications include an advanced degree as well as experience with one or more of the following disciplines: Digital media production, electronic newsgathering/broadcast journalism, audience development, newswriting, still photography and design.

Other desired skills and abilities include:

  • A keen understanding of market and audience trends facing media companies.
  • Experience mentoring students.
  • Knowledge of personal computer applications and digital content management systems.
  • An understanding of relevant state and federal regulations and laws.
