Faculty Position in Communication and Media

Northwestern State University’s Department of New Media, Journalism, and Communication Arts invites applications for a full-time tenure- track communication faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The start date for this position is August 1, 2026. The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of effective teaching, maintain an active research agenda or creative profile, and show a strong commitment to student success.

This generalist position in media and communication includes responsibilities in undergraduate teaching. This position will require the candidate to have strong media writing skills with the ability to translate those skills to the classroom/instructional environment. Candidates with expertise in one or more of the following areas are especially encouraged to apply:

  • Interpersonal/presentational communication
  • Writing for media
  • Innovative multimedia applications for news, documentary, sports, and promotional media production

Duties and Responsibilities

Faculty are expected to perform duties in accordance with university policies and applicable contracts. Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching undergraduate courses in Writing, Media, and Communication
  • Advising and mentoring students
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of the department and university through service and collaboration

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Media/Communication Studies or a related field (ABD may be considered)
    • NOTE: Candidates with a master’s degree and 10+ years of industry experience may be considered
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to teaching in a multicultural environment with students from diverse backgrounds and learning styles
  • Experience in academic advising

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry experience in communication or related areas
  • Record of research or hands-on experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Interpersonal/presentational communication
    • Writing for media
    • Innovative multimedia applications for news, documentary, sports, and promotional media production
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in community engagement and university service
