Communication Lecturer
Stanford University’s Department of Communication seeks to hire a 95%FTE lecturer in multimedia journalism. Based within the School of Humanities and Sciences, this lecturer will teach undergraduate and graduate-level courses in photography, video, audio/podcasting, and multimedia skills. This can include more advanced classes in VR, 360 Video and possibly multimedia uses of AI.
The lecturer will work closely with other journalism faculty and integrate curriculum, where possible, with other courses in news reporting, data journalism, investigative reporting and narrative writing. The candidate should have an online portfolio that demonstrates digital news expertise and shows creative practice in the field.
For this two-year term position, the department is looking for a highly experienced practitioner in daily and long-form news. There is room to design curriculum based on emerging practices in multimedia, photo and video storytelling and production, audio/podcasting, including work with drones, 360 video, geospatial and AI technologies. Additional responsibilities will include academic advising, thesis advising, and student mentoring. Courses taught could include, but are not limited to, Multimedia Storytelling, Immersive Journalism, and Digital Journalism Production.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Extensive experience related to still photography, video, audio/podcasting, and multimedia production techniques.
- Ability and interest in mentoring graduate students on research, projects, and theses.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive professional experience in journalism
- Experience related to emerging multimedia techniques, from vertical video to evaluating and using AI methods.
- University-level teaching experience. The ideal lecturer will be able to teach the basics of digital media, in areas such as fundamentals of design and production, short-form video for social media, and longer-form documentary-style videos. Qualified candidates will understand strategic use of digital media and have experience that includes knowledge of aesthetic principles as well as hard skills in a range of technical programs related to multimedia production.
The expected base pay range for this position is $108,675 - $130,410.
