Open Rank (Tenure-Track or Tenured) Position in Journalism
and Latin/Latin American Communities, Southwest Border Issues, Culture and Inclusion
The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University is conducting a national search for an open rank tenured or tenure-track position in journalism with a focus on Latin or Latin American communities and Southwest border issues, inclusion, culture and media.
Applicants must have a relevant Ph.D. at the time of appointment. The ideal candidate will have a professional background in any area of journalism (e.g., digital, broadcast, investigative, emerging media, magazine, or other) and the ability to teach related skills courses as well as conceptual, theoretical and methodological material at the undergraduate and graduate level, in on-campus and/or online modalities. Candidates should demonstrate a strong research agenda focused on advancing knowledge within the discipline and a commitment to principles of equity and inclusion.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Teach immersion and online courses in journalism and media at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Course assignments may include doctoral seminars in mass communication theory or methods, assisting with creating bilingual reporting experiences, as well as skills training for undergraduate and graduate students in journalism (according to the candidate’s area of expertise), journalism and media ethics, inclusivity and culture in media, and others. The candidate hired will be expected to contribute to the development of new courses as needed and to supervise student theses, applied projects and dissertations;
- Research commensurate with the demands of a top R1 institution, with a demonstrated record of publishing in premiere scholarly journals, academic edited volumes, and participation in disciplinary conferences;
- Established or potential for thought leadership in their area(s) of specialization within the broader field of journalism and Latin or Latin American/Southwest borderlands issues and culture;
- Service according to rank, potentially to include serving on standing and/or ad hoc committees at the school and university level, service to the profession, and community outreach.
Required qualifications
- Ph.D. in a relevant discipline (journalism, mass communication, media studies, or similar)

- At least five years’ experience in any area or type of journalism, in English and/or Spanish with a focus on Latin/Latin American communities and/or Southwest border issues and culture
- Experience teaching in both immersion (face-to-face classroom) and online environments
- Ability to teach both skills and conceptual courses in journalism (digital, broadcast, emerging media, investigative, or other, based on the candidate’s experience and expertise), media ethics, and inclusion at the undergraduate and/or master’s level
- Ability to teach courses in mass communication theory and methods at the doctoral level
- Record of scholarly publications and evidence of an active research agenda

Visiting Professor in Strategic Communications Leadership
The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University is seeking a strategic communications leader to serve as a Visiting Professor in Strategic Communications Leadership.
The Visiting Professor will join the award-winning and highly collaborative Cronkite School faculty, and will teach and mentor upper-level undergraduate and graduate journalism students pursuing degrees and careers in public relations, digital marketing, media relations, agency leadership and other strategic communications roles.
This is a part-time, benefits-eligible, visiting faculty appointment on ASU’s Downtown Phoenix Campus. Dates of employment are August 1, 2024, through December 16, 2024.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Teaching an on-campus course for graduate and upper-level undergraduate students in strategic communication leadership and ethics in the fall 2024 semester. This course meets 2.5 hours per week. It is a required course for all first-semester students in the Cronkite School’s new Master of Arts in Strategic Communication
- Teaching one additional course, on campus or online, in the fall 2024 semester.
- Holding at least two hours open for student meetings on campus per week for students to meet outside of class.
- Engaging the larger Cronkite School/ASU community by participating in events and mentorship opportunities, as assigned in collaboration with the Cronkite School dean.
About the teaching assignment
Strategic Communication Leadership and Ethics is a 3-credit seminar course that provides a broad understanding of ethical communications practices in agency and corporate settings, and includes instruction in reputation management, corporate communications, brand management and stakeholder engagement in a digital context. The course was developed and previously taught by Professor of Practice Mark Hass, formerly President and CEO of Edelman U.S. The Visiting Professor will receive access to all of the previous course materials and is welcome to adapt them in collaboration with the director of master’s programs.
The second teaching assignment is flexible depending on the Visiting Professor’s professional experience. Options could include, but are not limited to, Strategic Communication Writing, Crisis Communication, Diversity in Digital Audiences or Media Law for Strategic Communications.
About the Master of Arts in Strategic Communication
The Cronkite School is proud to launch a new Master of Arts in Strategic Communication in fall 2024. The School has taught strategic communications courses for many years, offered as electives to students in the Master of Mass Communication and the Master of Arts in Sports Journalism programs. Now the School is offering the courses in one cohesive, three-semester program designed to accelerate careers in strategic communications practice and leadership. In the first semester, students will take Strategic Communication Leadership and Ethics as well as an 8-credit “boot camp” experience, incorporating content creation skills with text, photo, video, audio and social media elements. In the second semester, students will dive more deeply into strategic communications research and campaign development, as well as advanced skills electives. In the third semester, students complete Media Law for Strategic Communication as well as a capstone course experience within the Cronkite Agency or the School’s L.A. Content Studio.

Candidates must demonstrate a strong research agenda that advances knowledge within strategic communication, and demonstrate the capacity to generate funding and contribute research commensurate with an R1 research institution. The Cronkite School seeks candidates with research interests across strategic communication, but is especially interested in scholarship in the following areas:

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, 9-month appointment with an open tenure or tenure-track academic rank of assistant professor, associate professor or full professor. The start date for this position is August 2024. Applicants must have a relevant terminal degree at the time of appointment.
Essential Duties
- Teach two courses in the Fall semester, and two courses in the Spring semester.
- Foster a learning culture that inspires strategic communication students with relevant content, tools and techniques.
- Conduct impactful research in keeping with the rigors of an R1 institution, and advance a relevant research agenda.
- Engage in service to students and the Cronkite School, including student mentorship, committee work and guest speaking.
- Serve as a disciplinary thought leader, proactively staying abreast of new strategic communication techniques and technology updates; curating exemplars of superior research and professional work; and highlighting superb student work.
- Collaborate with school leadership and faculty to develop curricula.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
