The Department of Mass Media and Strategic Communication at The University of Tennessee at Martin has an opening for a full-time tenure-track assistant professor beginning August 1, 2024. The department is seeking candidates with the ability to teach a variety of undergraduate courses in media design (print, digital, web, and mobile) and/or multimedia journalism.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in communication, strategic communication, digital media, visual communication, mass communication, or related field is required. An MFA with an emphasis in graphic design, digital content production, or web design would also be considered. Experience using Adobe Creative Cloud applications is required. Relevant professional experience in the field is desired. Salary is negotiable.

Assistant Professor in Media Law/Visual Communication

The University of Memphis Department of Journalism & Strategic Media invites applications for a full-time, nine-month tenure-track Assistant Professor in Media Law/Visual Communication to begin in August 2024. The accomplishments of candidates for this position must reflect their commitment to working with an inclusive student population, and their ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural academic goals of the university.

The ideal candidate will have a robust research agenda that complements one or more of the research and teaching specialization(s) in the department. This agenda may include media law and ethics, social media, visual communication, and/or DE&I. The university offers opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration in STEM, social science, humanities, agriculture, and defense. Pursuit of grant-funded research is expected. Candidate will be expected to teach the undergraduate and graduate media law classes, as well as graduate theoretical and research courses, and practical creative-focused courses in our undergraduate program. Undergraduate courses will be assigned based on the candidate’s area of expertise and department needs.

Minimum qualifications:

  • A doctorate in mass communication (preferred) or a related field. ABD candidates with a record of publication demonstrating research capacity and expected Ph.D. completion date within one year of starting the position will be considered.
  • Three years of professional experience in visual/multimedia communication.
  • University-level teaching experience in journalism & mass communications.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Five years of professional experience in visual/multimedia communication.
  • Experience teaching courses in media law, media ethics, and visual communication.

The Position  

The McGee Applied Research Center for Narrative Studies (McGee Center) at Vanderbilt University seeks an experienced and visionary Executive Director to lead its mission of promoting media literacy and understanding the impact of news stories on society. Through a holistic approach, innovative research endeavors, and Vanderbilt’s commitment to global impact and community engagement, the center envisions a future where media literacy becomes a cornerstone for informed and empowered citizenship in the 21st century.

The Executive Director will report to the Dean of Arts + Science or their designee, and will provide strategic leadership for all aspects of the McGee Center’s operations, oversee research initiatives, develop educational programs, and foster collaborations with internal and external stakeholders. In addition, the Executive Director will manage the renovation and expansion of existing campus media resources, including the Vanderbilt Television News Archive within the Jean and Alexander Heard Libraries. The McGee Center will lead the conversion of the Vanderbilt Television News Archive’s searchable metadata from summaries to full-text transcriptions, restoring the archive to its original purpose of providing the public with data-driven insight into the ways the news media shapes opinion.

The Vanderbilt University College of Arts + Science and the Vanderbilt Libraries are in an exciting time of transformation. With new leadership at the Chancellor, Provost, Dean of the College, and University Librarian levels, the McGee Center will be re-envisioning the future of research at Vanderbilt. Through radical collaboration, the center will deepen student and faculty engagement with the information, equip students for life-long information proficiency, increase faculty research impact, create more opportunities for interdisciplinary experimentation, and optimize access to media and resources, including marginalized and hidden histories and cultures outside of the mainstream.
