The College
The College of Communication and Media Sciences offers a comprehensive program of study, providing students opportunities to develop their communication and digital skills and prepare themselves to play important professional leadership roles. Studies lead to a Bachelor of Science degree with specializations in: Integrated Strategic Communications, Converged Media, Film and Video Communications, and Tourism and Cultural Communications. With student enrollment growth of 20 percent per year, the College is experiencing a dynamic positive growth. CCMS currently serves approximately 450 undergraduate majors. The College’s curriculum is designed to meet the requirements of the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications with a goal of achieving international specialized accreditation. The Integrated Strategic Communications specialization is accredited by the International Advertising Association. CCMS has three graduate specializations leading to a Master of Arts in Communications; these are: Strategic Public Relations, Tourism and Cultural Communications, and Filmmaking, in association with the New York Film Academy Abu Dhabi, which will launch in spring 2013.
The Opportunity
The College is seeking dynamic individuals who can provide expertise and leadership in the areas of multi-platform media storytelling, media writing, and media ethics. We seek candidates with innovative ideas who will be able to teach and to help foster a potentially thriving converged media program. The College defines Converged Media as an emerging form of media, which combines different forms of journalism, such as print, photography, and video, into one piece or group of pieces. The specialization in Converged Media prepares students to lead the philosophical and technological initiatives of traditional mass media players—newspapers, broadcasters, magazines—and provides students with the skills to examine and develop new digital mass media systems and to revamp existing media products to address the needs of a new digital media market. The College also has a growing student media initiative and an international chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists (SPJ). Candidates would be expected to be qualified to support these activities. New faculty members will teach and conduct research or creative activity within the Converged Media specialization.
The Requirements
Although a Ph.D. or equivalent is preferred, an MFA, MA or MS will be considered with relevant professional experience. Candidates for positions should have a record of previous teaching experience as well as strong professional experience and/or scholarly/creative activities in the area of emphasis and teaching experience that meets international standards. Candidates are expected to be effective teachers/scholars and are expected to teach in both the undergraduate and graduate programs and be involved in outreach efforts to the community. Preference for positions will be given to candidates who demonstrate the ability to teach, conduct research and/or engage in creative activity.
The position also requires successful applicants to handle student advising, course development, serve on College-wide committees, and engage in ongoing accreditation preparedness activities. Desired, but not required, is bi-lingual fluency in Arabic and English and/or interest in media and children’s digital programming. Minorities and women are encouraged to apply.

Successful candidates with innovative ideas who will be able to teach basic principles/fundamentals, writing, strategic planning and campaigns, all incorporating elements of advertising, public relations, and marketing communications in traditional and online environments. ISC is the largest specialization and is establishing a student chapter of the Middle East Public Relations Association (MEPRA). The College also has a Strategic Public Relations graduate program. Candidates would be expected to be qualified to support these activities. New ISC faculty members will teach and conduct research or creative activities within the scope of the specialization.

Department Head for Mass Communication
The Department of Mass Communication at the American University of Sharjah invites applications for the position of Head of Department, beginning Fall of 2013. We encourage candidates who have extensive experience in teaching, research, and administration in the areas of journalism, advertising, public relations, and mass communication to apply. The Mass Communication program is one of the most vibrant and successful programs of its kind in the Middle East. The Program has concentrations in journalism, public relations, general mass communication, and advertising, which is the largest major in the College of Arts and Sciences. Mass Communication graduates are already recognized by the media industry as being among the best in the region.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. in mass communication or a related field, an established record of research, publication, demonstrated experience in budget management and personnel evaluation, and a proven record of leadership, success in administration and faculty development. The department will hire a teacher-scholar who practices a leadership style that nurtures collegiality and cuts across conventional disciplinary boundaries. In addition, the successful candidate should have a bold vision for the future development of the department. Familiarity with the media industry in the Middle East and the GCC countries is preferred but not required.
