POSITION DESCRIPTION
THE POSITION: Assistant Professor of Public Relations, School of Journalism and Mass Communication

Florida International University (FIU) invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Public Relations in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations, within the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. This is a nine-month, tenure-earning academic appointment, scheduled to begin August 2013.

Requirements and responsibilities:
We seek a candidate with a strong professional background in public relations, as well as a track record of scholarly research, publishing and/or creative production. Though a terminal degree is expected, a candidate with a Master’s degree, previous teaching experience and significant professional experience in public relations will be considered. Candidates should have experience with global communication, campaigns, integrated communication, and metrics and evaluation, with an emphasis on new media technologies. They should be up-to-date on digital and social media and have strong design skills. Candidates will teach an array of courses in our undergraduate programs (Public Relations, Advertising and Digital Media Studies), as well as our Global Strategic Communication Master’s program.

Successful candidates will have proven ability to educate students in a diverse environment, in a school that offers undergraduate majors in Journalism, Advertising, Broadcast Media, Digital Media, and Public Relations; as well as graduate tracks in Global Strategic Communications and Spanish-language Journalism. This position requires teaching upper-division undergraduate courses, and the opportunity to teach graduate courses.

Upon hiring, the successful candidate will be required to develop a research agenda and/or significant professional and creative activities consistent with the expectations for a tenure-earning faculty member. This person will also be expected to participate in the life of a very dynamic department and school, contributing to service activities such as curriculum development, student mentoring and other academic activities.

Qualifications:
A terminal degree (Ph.D. or M.F.A) is expected. At a minimum, candidates must have a Master’s degree and significant professional experience in public relations.
